The Donmar offers a variety of opportunities for people wishing to gain work experience in some elements of theatre-making. We also offer a year-long training post for an emerging director and an emerging designer.
Since we are a small organisation, we are only able to offer work experience in the specific departments listed below. Please don’t send us applications for general work experience, since we aren’t able to accommodate them. We are only able offer work experience to those 18 years or older at present.
Development department internship
The Donmar offers a part-time placement in the Development department for up to three months. The role involves assisting in a variety of fundraising activities for the theatre, with a focus on the areas of finance, individual giving and events. There may also be opportunities to experience fundraising through corporates, major events, trusts and foundations, legacies and major donors – depending on the timing of the placement.
This is a voluntary position for students in their final year of an Arts Management degree, where a work placement is necessary as part of the degree course. Hours are to be agreed between the department and the successful applicant, but the placement would usually involve a commitment of around 8-12 hours per week.

Stage Management internship
The Donmar offers a placement position in the Stage Management team from the first day of rehearsals through to press night. This position is available for each production. The role involves helping the Assistant Stage Manager with the researching, sourcing and/or making of both props and furniture, and assisting the Deputy Stage Manager in rehearsals with setting-up, re-setting and with scene changes.
This is a voluntary position for students in their final year of Stage Management training or similar, where a work placement is necessary as part of the course.

Training for Directors
Each year, we offer one Resident Assistant Director position for a director to work on every Donmar production for 12 months. This is for a director at an early stage in their career, who wishes to gain further experience of working in a producing theatre.

Training for Designers
Each year, we offer one Resident Design Assistant position for a designer to work on every Donmar production for 12 months. This is for a designer at an early stage in their career, who wishes to gain further experience of working in a producing theatre.
This position is advertised on a yearly basis on the vacancies section of our website. We will be advertising applications for next year’s position in due course.
Please note that we do not offer work placements or work shadowing in the directing or designing fields.
