a new play by Alice Birch
11 October 2019 – 30 November 2019
‘A potent, devastating exploration of the criminal justice system’
‘A piece that gives impressive weight to the minutiae of chaotic lives while creating a panoramic sense of Britain today… delicious provocation from one of our most exciting playwrights’
‘A rich, devestating production Aberg’s company nail it’
She can’t stay awake.
She sold drugs.
She’s good at interrogations.
She drinks in the mornings.
She ate a rabbit.
She smashed up a shop.
She stabbed a man.
She used a hammer.
She had a baby.
She can’t find her mother.
She’s covered in blood and doesn’t know why.
Alice Birch’s heartbreaking new play reaches across society to explore the impact of the criminal justice system on women and their families.
From 100 unnamed scenes, this theatrical provocation challenges the director Maria Aberg to construct an entirely unique production. [BLANK] celebrates the 40th anniversary of Clean Break, the leading theatre company working with women affected by the criminal justice system.
A Donmar Warehouse and Clean Break co-production.
We want the Donmar to be welcoming to everyone. As part of this, we recognise that some audience members may appreciate additional guidance on the content of our plays. Click here for more information.
[BLANK] was first co-commissioned by Clean Break and the National Theatre.
During the rehearsal process for each production at the Donmar, experts come into our rehearsal room to speak to the company about some of the context behind the play. For our [BLANK] podcast series, we will be sharing excerpts from these longer conversations.
At a recent event, we gathered Artistic Director Michael Longhurst, Clean Break Co-Artistic Director Róisín McBrinn, Resident Assistant Director Blythe Stewart and [BLANK] company members Jackie Clune and Ayesha Antoine. They met in the Donmar kitchen (sorry about the cutlery sounds) with some of our audience members to discuss the play and what attracted them to it.
