Theatre Making Programmes

We are passionate about creating theatre with local young people as young artists,  which presents the most exciting and urgent issues of our time. Led by leading theatre-makers in collaboration with young artists, teachers, and community leaders, these  projects are presented at the Donmar and in community spaces in our home boroughs

Take the Stage

Alongside two of our productions per year, Take the Stage gives young people a chance to learn about our productions and work with professional theatre-makers to create their own piece of theatre to share on the Donmar stage.

Through practical workshops, students investigate the creative process and themes of a current Donmar production, learning practical theatre-making skills and developing confidence, both as a performer and an individual.

Take the Stage is aimed at groups of students between the ages of 14 and 18 years old from Camden and Westminster schools and colleges.

LOCAL Residency

The Donmar Warehouse LOCAL Residency consists of two groups from Camden and Westminster that attend separate weekly workshops over 12 weeks. Using theatre and storytelling techniques they get to create a new piece of work which reflects their lived experiences, shaped by what is most pressing and urgent to them.  These weekly sessions are led by theatre-makers, with support from additional artists from relevant fields, such as music composition. The project culminates in the groups performing their work to each other, and friends and family.

My Future

My Future is a new project for Key Stage 3 students exploring activism and theatre-making. After the successful run of THE TRIALS, our LOCAL Production about climate justice, we at the Donmar are keen to explore the potential of theatre activism.

This project is curated by Anne Langford, and devised in partnership with climate activists, teachers and young people. With the support from PwC and contributions from local schools and students, we aim to bring devising and activism to the next level.

Similar to our flagship programme Take the Stage, My Future will have 8-9 in-school sessions over the course of the Autumn term. A climate forum will be hosted by Donmar and PwC where young people discuss the most pressing issues of climate change with peers and activists. A detailed schedule can be found here.
