Our Fifth Annual Schools' Tour Comes to a Close

News Story

For the past four weeks, our schools tour has travelled to 15 schools across London as part of our Donmar LOCAL programme. We have shared the production with almost 3,400 young people, bringing unforgettable live theatre directly into their schools. Thank you to our cast, creative team, stage management team and every teacher who welcomed us into their school and made the tour possible.

This will stay in my head as a great experience for years.

I am so honoured to have come to watch this show

The Donmar’s Schools’ Tour programme was created as a post-pandemic effort to ensure that young people had access to theatre. With expressive arts subjects increasingly under-prioritised in schools and enrolment in GCSE Drama down 45% since 2010, the Donmar aims to support Key Stage 3 students to engage with the arts in a cross-curricular way. To develop the play, the creative team has worked with young people and teachers from the Donmar’s local schools’ network to ensure the work is age-appropriate and  reflects the perspectives of young people.

Since 2021, nearly 12,000 young people have seen a Donmar Schools’ Tour. This year, the theatre is hoping to meet a further 4,100. As an annual event, with a different play each year, the Schools’ Tour aims to inspire young people to develop a love of theatre-going throughout their life.

The students were absolutely gripped by the production!

It was really encouraging to hear students talking about the play afterwards. Many said it was the best thing they'd ever seen, or that they now wanted to see more live theatre.

The complexity and simplicity of the performance was pitched at a level pupils could access, while exploring issues we don't often get to fully cover in the curriculum.

The Schools' Tour is generously supported by headline partner Howdens, The Dow Clewer Foundation, and Westminster City Council.

We'd also like to thank our Donmar LOCAL supporters: Adam & Victoria Freudenheim, The Biernat Family Fund, Dasha Shenkman OBE, The Emmanuel Kaye Foundation, The Hyatt Holland Foundation, Jane Hurt, John Lyon’s Charity, The John S Cohen Foundation, Julia Zilberman, Kirwin Davies Foundation, PwC, Sam Finkelstein & Staci Arnovitz, Shaftesbury Capital, The Speciale Family Charitable Trust, Universal Consolidated Group, The Yards, and an Anonymous supporter.

With special thanks to our Season Supporter, Charles Holloway OBE.
