Paule Constable

Lighting Designer

Paule is an associate director of the National Theatre and has designed productions for all the major UK companies including War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (both National Theatre and worldwide). She is also an associate of Matthew Bourne’s company and designed The Midnight Bell, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Red Shoes, Dorian Gray and Play Without Words for him. Paule is a Royal Designer for Industry.

Recent productions include: Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (Complicite); Light, Bach Dances (Hofesh Shechter Company); The Handmaid's Tale (ENO); Guys and Dolls (Bridge Theatre); Oliver! (CFT and The West End); Ballet Shoes; Nye; The Ocean at the End of the Lane; Follies; The Confessions and Til the Stars Come Down (National Theatre).  

Opera Design includes: Giulio Cesare; Billy Budd (Glyndebourne); Satyagrah; Medea (ENO); Death in Venice (Royal Opera House); Cav and Pag (Metropolitan Opera).  

She has received 5 Olivier awards, 2 Tony Awards, the Helpmann Award, the Rayne Award and numerous Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Knight of Illumination awards. In 2019 she was awarded the London Critics Circle Special Award for her contribution to the British Theatre Industry.    

Paule is a passionate advocate for sustainable theatre practice and one of the founders of Freelancers Make Theatre Work.
